Day 7 – Wild Walking Wednesday

Day 7 – Wild Walking Wednesday

It has officially been one week since Evie had SDR surgery!  How the time has flown! It honestly feels a like a dream that it has happened already.  We were anticipating it for so long.  Now every day we look forward to seeing her get stronger and re-develop her skills.  What a journey it will continue to be!

Evie had more of a restless night but no spasms.  This morning the sun was shining so we decided to check out the St. Louis Zoo.  We had to drive through Forest Park to get to the entrance.  The park is lovely and no doubt it is beautiful in the warmer months (pretty now)!  So many little ponds and statues and big trees.  Fun Fact – The park held the World’s Fair in 1904.

Once we parked we headed to the zoo, which is FREE! It was Voted America’s Best Free Attraction by USA Today. We were only able to explore a few sections of the zoo today but what we did see was amazing!  Even in March it is lovely to walk around and there is plenty to see.  We spent the morning checking out various animal including penguins, grizzly bears and elephants!!  It was a WILD time!

Later we headed to physiotherapy.  We could tell Evie was tired.  She did a few different things today.  First they worked on the treadmill.  She walked straight for a few minutes, followed by side stepping on both sides.

Next was an obstacle course.  She held onto a hula hoop and stepped up onto objects or over them.  After this she headed to practice climbing stairs.  She did this three times as there were three princesses who needed their ball gowns on (dresses were at the bottom, princesses at the top).

Next was the swing!  One activity she was pumped to do.  They swung seated, on high knees and then one knee up (switching legs).  This is an excellent way to stabilize and work her core.

The last thing she worked on was independent walking. One week post up and she has taken a few steps on her own! YAY!!  She had taken the odd step on her own yesterday but today was the first time she took multiple. The video below was right after she “wobbled” from her first attempt and was scared.  This is why she isn’t very happy.  She is pretty much trying to get away from Rebecca (good thing Rebecca doesn’t take things personally) and come to me who is of course trying to take a video (who can blame me right? Exciting!).  She then wobbled again, almost fell and screamed (edited out for the safety of your ears).  So proud of our sassy little lady and how far she has come already!

The day ended up being a wild and walking kind of Wednesday!
