Day 8 – The Bandage Is Off!
It was a beautiful day in St. Louis! The sun was out and it reached to 15 above 0 (Celsius)! Definitely the nicest day we have had so far so of course we had to take advantage of it!
This morning our whole gang walked to the hospital for Evelyn’s physio session. The walk from our hotel to the hospital is about 15-20 minutes (20 minutes for me, Brian can do it in less). We have been taking a more pedestrian friendly route which is a nice walk past stores and cute places to eat. Once at the hospital it was time for Ev to work! Grandma and Grandpa stayed for the hour to see her in action.
Evelyn started on the treadmill where she practiced her walking on an incline. Then she went on “The Rocket” and did some blastoffs! Next she practiced standing still on her own for several seconds. Evelyn then went on a scavenger hunt for princess gear and to practice her walking. Once found, she put everything on and walked a bit more. Lastly, she finished her session on the bike. She did more propelling on her own this time but she still needs to work on her steering (good thing we have a few years to go before driving lessons!). Grandma and Grandpa were impressed!
After physio we headed to Dr. Park’s office. Today is Day 8 so Evelyn’s bandage can be removed. We figured she would do better with someone else removing it so we popped in and were helped right away. I wasn’t excited to see the mark underneath but after the gauze was removed it didn’t look too bad. It still has a “glue” type film on it which will fall off on it’s own. Evie did great with the removal!
Once back at the hotel Brian set up “Daddy’s Day Spa” for Evie. She hasn’t had a real bath or a hair wash for 8 days so we decided to wash her hair in the kitchen sink and give her a sponge bath. Brian set up a bed of blankets on the counter for her to lay on and then we scootched her to the edge of the sink. It worked pretty well. Tomorrow she gets her casts so it will be another week or so before she can have a real bath.
Later this afternoon we all headed to downtown St. Louis to check out the Gateway Arch. This arch is HUGE (630 feet tall to be exact) and was constructed of steel and concrete in the 1960’s. Mom and Dad did the tour first and then played with the kiddos in the park while Brian and I went to the top. It takes four minutes in a tiny five person pod to get to the top of the arch and three minutes down. It was really neat to learn how it was constructed and the views at the top were beautiful! If you do check it out, just note that it is pretty hot/stuffy in the tram cars and at the top. It isn’t for someone who is claustrophobic that is for sure. It was a really neat thing to check out and of course a St. Louis landmark!
