First Week of Rehab

First Week of Rehab

Last week was Evelyn’s first full week of rehab…and we survived!  I meant to share the highlights sooner but we had a few house hiccups we had to deal with and then this past weekend Wes got an ear infection and the rest of us seem to be fighting colds/migraines.  I blame this wacky weather!!

Evelyn’s first full week of therapy included traditional physiotherapy, CME, strength training and Conductive Education.  Evelyn was so happy to see all of her therapists and they were happy to see her.  They noticed how much faster and smoother her transitions are (ie. getting into half kneel position), how she appears taller and is able to put her weight back on her heels easier.  Though her balance is still off, we notice she is able to catch herself better than before as she appears to be more aware of her body.  Evelyn worked really hard in each session by but Thursday afternoon it was clear she was pretty tired.

We also started thinking about summer and her therapy schedule.  Evelyn will be attending summer camp at March of Dimes for a few weeks as well as participating in an intensive.  We also booked a camping weekend, have a wedding to go to and hope to visit Santa’s Village a few times.  Plus all the regular fun stuff we enjoy doing with our friends (ie. Splash Pads, Zoo)! Oh now I am dreaming of summer…

Brian and I finally finished getting our home gym set up for Evie which came in handy today as we couldn’t make her scheduled therapy.  In the “gym” we have a treadmill, a Total Gym, a BOSU Ball, a peanut ball, exercise ball and a kettle bell. We also have a medicine ball, bean bags, calf stretcher, noodles (to walk over) and a vibration plate (which we will try in a few weeks).  It is challenging to get Evelyn to work out at home but I am planning to create some sort of reward system for every time she does.  Perhaps we can use this system to help with the night splints.  We have been trying to put them on her at night but it is always a disaster (even one leg).  Ev moves a lot in her sleep and she doesn’t get into a deep sleep with them on causing her to not get a good rest and we all know how important rest is!  We have been putting them on during the day and will continue to try at night.

Overall our first full week of therapy went well and this will be our schedule for the next few months.  Here is hoping Spring finally comes this week because our house has some serious cabin fever!
