Day 4 – Evie’s “Back”

Day 4 – Evie’s “Back”

We know Evelyn is feeling more like herself when she is the little chatterbox we know and love.  Last night Brian said she talked a mile a minute and hardly slept as she kept telling stories.  Evie loves telling stories, can be pretty expressive and has a big imagination.  The staff at the hospital got to see our Evie today and a few commented on how much better she was today compared to yesterday.

The first event of the day was getting her IV tube out and Evie was happy to not be connected any more.  Sarah, Evie’s nurse today (an excellent one at that) removed it and all the stickiness from the tape.  Ev was so good about it all so Sarah brought her three Dora stickers. Evie picked the purple one and said the other two could go to other kids (awwww) but Sarah said it was okay to keep them all as they had plenty.  When these two first met, Evie would ask her to “Leave, right now!” and today they were laughing with each other.

Next it was the first physiotherapy session of the day.  Evelyn had Jessica and both of her sessions were focused on cooking food! Evelyn transferred well into her stroller and onto the flat table again but she definitely complained about back pain now and then and there were a few tears at the beginning.  During this session Evie played on her stomach for a little while and then spent some time playing at the kitchen while both seated and standing. Lastly, she took some steps (with help) to her stroller which was super exciting!  It is my first time posting videos so hope they work!

We then heading quickly down to the caf (which is open from 6:00 am to 2:00 am by the way) for a quick lunch.  Once back to our room Ev had a video chat with her Oma and Opa and she ate a bit.  Her appetite is better but still not where it usually is.  We were very much encouraging quiet/nap time but Evleyn had other plans.  For someone who just worked so hard and didn’t sleep a lot, she had a lot of energy still!  She was also treated with some ice cream from a staff member who said she could get a treat if she worked hard in physio, which she did!

At 2:00 pm we headed back down to the physiotherapy floor for round two! This time Evelyn wore her super shoes. It is true what everyone says, these SDR kiddos improve by the hour!! Ev was on her feet a large portion of this session and she mentioned her back being sore several times again but took breaks as she requested.  She walked with a grocery cart to collect pizza pieces.  Then side stepped and finished the session with a bike ride which she LOVED! She didn’t want to leave and was happy to know she would be back tomorrow morning.

After physio we went back to the room and had a visit with Grandma, Grandpa and Wesley.  Evelyn ate quite a bit for dinner which was good to see.  Also happy to report tummy issues have not been a problem today!

Evie also said goodbye to two of her nurses who she won’t see again as tomorrow Evie will be discharged!!  Everyone who has taken care of her the last few days/nights have been amazing! Can’t say enough good things about the care we have received.  Everyone has been so nice and helpful!  We are a bit nervous about having Evelyn back at our hotel tomorrow as we will be back to being the sole caregivers but it will be so nice to be back together again! Wesley misses his big sister!

Also, we have met two other SDR families now since being in the hospital, one being our roommates who are from France.  Today we also met another family from Israel.  I am sure we will be crossing paths many times over the next few weeks.

Evie ended her evening with a typical over tired Evelyn meltdown followed by a funny and sweet Evie chat.  It is official, Evie is back and ready to take on the world!
