Day 122 – 4 Months Post-Op

Day 122 – 4 Months Post-Op

I can’t believe my last post was a month ago!  I have had every intention of writing more often but this last month has been jam packed and time has flown by!! Hello SUMMER!!

Since June 7, Evie has wrapped up her “Kindergarten is Coming” program.  Parents were able to stay for the last session and see their kids in action and I was determined to attend as I totally forgot about it the last session (I felt so bad!).  Evie impressed me with her number recognition and counting skills.  She also painted, played with a kitchen and enjoyed story time.

Her weekly Conductive Education class at March of Dimes also ended in June.  She really loves going there and will have a blast during the two weeks at camp she is signed up for later this summer.  This program really is amazing and includes therapy, learning life skills, is creative, educational and of course fun!

On June 12 Evie also had her second strabismus surgery.  Originally we thought only one eye was going to be operated on but they decided to do both as even her “good” eye was drifting a bit.  The doctor also removed some scar tissue from her previous surgery to hopefully prevent another one.  Evie did amazing!  She was brave, handled all the pre-op stuff well and was calm going into the OR.  In recovery was a different story but very similar to her last eye surgery when coming off “the drugs.”  She was screaming, thrashing and basically mad (nurses thought she was in extreme pain but it was typical Evelyn but AMPED UP). It only lasted about 15 minutes and we were mentally prepared for it (though holding onto a mad 40lb kid is a lot harder than a 20lb kid).  It must be due to a different type of anesthesia she reacts like this, because after SDR she wasn’t like this at all.  Any ways, we can tell her eyes have improved in alignment and she handled all the eye drops so well!! Very proud of her.

In June Evie continued to be in therapy 5 days a week.  I think it is safe to say it has been exhausting which we expected from talking to other SDR families. This summer will consist of some weeks of 5 days a week (two intensives booked, 2 hours a day for the week and two weeks of Conductive Ed camp are booked which is 6 hours a day).  The other weeks she will attend therapy 3 days a week plus swimming lessons and we will get out and be active any free days we have.  Maybe throw a lazy day or two in for some rest as I know Evie could always use it!  We have lots of fun things planned this summer so even though it will be busy, hopefully she has fun (we have even tried a few physio sessions at parks the last few weeks to change it up)!  We are so thankful for everyone who works with her…they are all amazing!

I will be contacting St. Louis soon to start Evie’s 6 month follow up videos.  It will be good to see their recommendations on therapy, especially going into the school year.  I also want to see what they say about her toe walking.  Not sure if it is a growth spurt or habit or what, but that left heel is popping up a lot lately though she can easily put is down at anytime. Other than that, I feel Evie is stronger and her endurance is coming along!

Also in the last month we celebrated Father’s Day, Evie’s Grandad’s 60th Birthday and Wesley’s 2nd Birthday with more celebrations coming this summer! Hope you are all have a great summer so far…it has been a hot one around here!

P.S. Evie’s warrior scar is healing up nicely!  Can’t believe how faded it is already.
