Springing Along

Springing Along

Spring has finally sprung!

After what felt like a long and cold winter, Spring is here!  The tree leaves are coming out, the flowers are starting to grow, the days are longer, people seem happier and we are spending more time outside.  Evie has been learning about plants and worms.  There have been quite a few days of rain which often leaves the side walk covered in worms big and small.  The kids love watching them and I’m impressed Evie isn’t afraid to hold them. She is such a nature girl!

Evie has been doing well.  She has recently started back up at Grandview and will be going to physio there once a week for the next few months.  We will be working on keeping her weight back on her heels, balance and motor planning.  She completed 12 sessions at Train Like Heroes and we are planning to continue on in the summer/fall.  We still visit SMILE weekly for physiotherapy and she continues to be in swimming lessons.   We will also be doing a another trial with the Bioness system later this month for two weeks.  Hoping we can really try it out now that the weather is nicer.

Overall, Evie’s schedule is lighter as we have taken a step back from having something scheduled every day.  This is because the weather is nicer therefore more outdoor play aka secret physio!  Evie is loving riding her scooter, playing and climbing at the park and is actively trying to ride her bike.  She was having trouble keeping her feet on the pedals as she doesn’t have the ankle strength/function to bring her foot around like most of us can.  She now has pedal baskets so these will keep her feet in place so she can a) pedal easier and get the movement down and b) look where she is going (she kept looking down watching her feet).  We have also signed both kids up for soccer this summer and Evie will be learning t-ball too.

We are still working on the toe walking and improving her balance.  She recently went through a growth spurt so she was all over the place and falling a lot (her poor bruised legs).  Every growth spurt is tough but overall I feel I am noticing new things when it comes to her abilities.  She is able to walk backwards easier,  jump higher (and I even saw her try and tuck her legs up) and can run farther!  This girl loves to run! It isn’t always the proper form but she can run a fair distance compared to a few months ago.  I even said to another parent the other day that I just love watching her run because there was a time we weren’t sure if it would happen.   She is getting lots of practice in for the Grandview race this fall (and there is a group of us including myself who will be running too).  So exciting!

Lastly, today we went to Sky Zone which is an indoor trampoline park.  We went earlier in hopes it wouldn’t be too busy as I can’t help but worry how Evie will manage with lots of children running around or in this case, bouncing around.  She had a BLAST!  Both kids enjoyed themselves so much and loved jumping around all the trampolines (and were sooo tired after).  I was so happy and proud watching Evie jump over and over again in a row.  Before her surgery there was no way she could have landed on her feet after each jump.  Even 6 months ago.  Dr. Park tells patients they will continue to improve years after surgery and moments like this make me so excited for her future!

Just want to wish all the amazing mother’s, grandmothers and maternal figures a very Happy Mother’s Day!  Special shout out to my wonderful mother-in-laws and my amazing Mom!
